The Basilica of Santa María la Antigua, built over more than a century and beautifully restored.
The Catedral Basílica Metropolitana Santa María la Antigua took more than a century to build, from 1688 to 1796. Its white bell towers, set with mother-of-pearl, frame a darker stone façade facing Plaza de la Independencia.
After a major restoration the cathedral reopened in time for World Youth Day in January 2019, when Pope Francis consecrated its new altar. The interior is bright and calm, a welcome break from the midday heat.
