Plaza de la Independencia
Casco Viejo's main square, where Panama declared its independence from Colombia in 1903.
Also known as Plaza Catedral or Plaza Mayor, this is the historic heart of the old city. Panama's independence from Colombia was proclaimed here on 3 November 1903, and busts of the republic's founders line the square.
The Metropolitan Cathedral fills one side, the Panama Canal Museum another, and the Palacio Municipal (city hall) completes the set. A bandstand sits in the middle, and the benches under the trees are a good place to get your bearings before exploring.
