Plaza Bolívar
A leafy square honouring Simón Bolívar, next to the palace where he convened the 1826 Congress of Panama.
Plaza Bolívar is one of Casco Viejo's prettiest squares, shaded by trees and surrounded by restored buildings, cafés and the Church of San Francisco de Asís. A monument to Simón Bolívar stands at its centre.
On one side is the Palacio Bolívar, today home to Panama's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1826 Bolívar convened the Congress of Panama (the Amphictyonic Congress) here, an early attempt to unite the newly independent nations of Latin America.
