Plaza de Francia and Las Bóvedas
A monument to the French canal builders at the tip of the peninsula, with vaults built into the old sea wall.
At the southern tip of Casco Viejo, Plaza de Francia honours the French attempt to build the canal in the 1880s and the thousands of workers who died from disease. An obelisk topped with a Gallic rooster rises above busts of the project's leaders, including Ferdinand de Lesseps.
Las Bóvedas, the vaults set into the old city wall beside the plaza, were used over the centuries as storerooms and cells. Steps lead up from the plaza to the Paseo Esteban Huertas promenade on top of the wall.
